When Tim Burton’s “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” is released in IMAX 3D, it’ll be the first time most people see our iconic President in 3D. Until then, here’s a 3D photograph of President Lincoln.
Stereograph by: Lewis Emory Walker Date: February 1865
3D HISTORY: Yes, this is real! You’re looking at a stereograph (3D Photo) of Lincoln taken 147 years ago this month. Abraham Lincoln was also photographed in 3D at civil war battlegrounds (coming soon to this blog!). The 3D camera that was used to capture President Lincoln in depth took a left image and a right image called a stereopair. Learn more about Seteropairs here. When Lincoln appears in 3D it feels like magic; like you’ve just opened a window into history.
HOW TO EXPERIENCE LINCOLN IN 3D: 1) Use a stereoscopic viewer and see it the way Lincoln did. 2) View it with a lenticular display (autosteroscopic = 3D without glasses) in camera mode like a 3D smartphone, Fuji W1, Fuji W3, or even a Nintendo 3DS. 3) Or enter the left and right images into StereoData Maker and create your own 3D image. Download StereoData Maker here! 4) Or the coolest way – you can FREEVIEW: Stare into the middle until the left image and the right image form President Lincoln in depth.
ONE LAST THING: Why is Lincoln’s hair so short in this photograph? I found these notes from the Library of Congress,”The short haircut was perhaps suggested by Lincoln’s barber to facilitate the taking of a life mask by Clark Mills. Lincoln knew from experience how long hair could cling to plaster.” Which means President Lincoln was both photographed and molded in 3D!
